Resoconto della giornata di scavo

Area 1000

Today the documentary film crew came by so we cleaned again and got all the nooks and crannies.

David and Kailey Anabel cleaned the test pit, which after the rain from the weekend was slightly muddy.

The rest of the trenches were cleaned and the walls were evened out.

Area 2000

The south west corner of Sector A: We investigated a possible feature and uncovered poorly preserved bone, including an ulna and radius. We also found a pelvis in poor condition.  Both femora were also found in better condition than the other bones because they were under a thicker layer of soil and better protected. Additionally several vertebrae and ribs were found in rough anatomical position, This area has not been given a number yet.

US 2251: We uncovered the cut in the North West corner of section A. We began removing the fill and came across several long bones, teeth, nails, and glass. The context of the wall is unclear.

The brick structure was completely uncovered to the North, however the context is still unclear until it can be further uncovered towards the south. Bones from the ossuary must be removed first.

Us 2353: The north west wall parallel to US 2251. The Fill contained clay, slate and brick. While removing poorly preserved vertebrae, ox coax, ribs, radius, and ulna were uncovered. We are unsure of where the rest of the skeleton is and we will further explore tomorrow.

US 2295: We removed fill from the ossuary. We found many unarticulated bones within the ossuary. We removed two craniums and a mandible.

Area 3000

Cleaned entire area east to west in anticipation of presentation. Lindsey presented area 3000 to the film crew which accompanied Professor Poinar
Sector A photographed burial cuts -3291 and -3305. Also photographed – 3238. Focus turned from the burials to the north-east corner of the sector to a suspected burial delineated by a slight change in soil and abundance of rocks in the fill. Levelled this area to the same height as 3217, to be explored further tomorrow.
Cleaned 3217investigationg what is believed to be a lithic coffin on the north side of the recently uncovered section of the wall.
Sector B trench 3258 continued with pic axe and trowel. Trench turned north with the day’s excavation and headed towards trench 3230 in sector A. Found scattered bone and teeth.
Excavated skeleton 3307. Found that the right side of this skeleton was cut by another possible burial and the left leg has been reduced (shifted post-burial). Scattered bone surrounds the feet of this articulated skeleton which will be explored further tomorrow.

Area 4000

Settore A

Settore C
Dopo la rimozione di US 4136 (strato argilloso ricco di frammenti litici e laterizi, relativo a delle fasi recenti di riadattamento dell’area) l’estensione di US 4130, complesso di lastre di ardesia livellate, raggiunge la quasi interezza dello spazio intercorrente fra le due strutture medievali, US 4131 ed US 4134 (ipotizzate come porzione del corridoio est del chiostro).

This morning we did a presentation of the site to a documentary crew and visiting professor. For most of the morning, we cleaned the surface of the entire site. In section 4136, we cleaned and began to remove the layer. In the process we found animal bone (including a cow’s tooth), pottery (including a large portion of 16th century ware), and nails. In 4900, the burial pit was deepened and within the pit pottery was found. The test pit 4800 was leveled out where the previous expansion had taken place. In 4800, jumbled human remains and pottery were found. Additionally, the western wall in section A was uncovered.
